Amplified Bible
The Amplified Bible is designed to reveal additional shades of meaning from the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek without sacrificing accuracy. By using synonyms, definitions, and clarifying phrases, it expands the meaning of key words directly within the text. These amplifications appear in parentheses, brackets, or gray text, allowing English readers to understand the full sense of the original languages.
Amplifications may highlight theological or historical details, express the intensity or nuance of a word, or clarify concepts that might otherwise be missed in a traditional translation. This approach brings out the richness of the biblical languages and helps readers experience the depth intended in the original text.
Now available, Two-tone editions of the Amplified Bible feature soft gray typography to distinguish amplified words from the main text in place of brackets and to highlight words in parentheses making the text more readable and easier to follow.
Text in brackets, or gray text in Two-tone editions, identifies justified words, phrases, or brief commentary that are not fully expressed in the English wording but are supported by the meaning of the original languages or by other passages of Scripture. These amplifications may expand a word’s meaning, clarify a theological idea, reinforce a teaching, or provide helpful context.
Parenthetical text, which is also gray in Two-tone editions, supplies in‑context definitions for names, places, or key terms. When reading aloud, these definitions may be skipped.
Italicized conjunctions—and, or, nor—do not appear in the original languages but are added to connect amplified English words indicated by the Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek.
